AP semiconductor fab unit to go critical next year

THE Chairman of Intellect Inc, Dr June Min, who has signed up with the Andhra Pradesh Government to set up a semiconductor fab, claimed that production would begin by July 2006.

He was assured support by the Andhra Pradesh Government for the proposed greenfield plant.

Dr Min had entered into agreement with the State Government in December last to form a joint venture company for setting up a semiconductor fab manufacturing unit near Hyderabad. He has incorporated Nano-tech Silicon India.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, the Government proposes to provide the necessary land for the project and support infrastructure, including industrial water and quality power. This would be located near the proposed hardware park close to the upcoming Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The South Korean entrepreneur, has proposed to develop a logic semiconductor fab which will have a capacity of 30,000 wafers start up per month. It will start with 0.35 sub microns and extend to 0.25 sub microns with five metal layers per month. The mega fab will be operated under shared fab initiative.

As per the arrangement, the company will establish technology partners and captive customers by allocating up to 60 per cent of the fab capacity. The remaining 40 per cent will be offered for shared purpose. The phase one project cost is estimated at $600 million and would have capability of 30,000 wafers per month.

The fab range includes wireless communication chips, PC chips, digital consumer electronic chips, automobile ICs and memories.
