`Soil testing vital for good yield'

MADURAI: A research programme carried out by the Indian Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) at Tiruchi on management of soil nutrients for improving productivity has emphasised the need for soil testing as a pre-requisite for determining the quantum of nutrients.

According to the IFFCO Field Officer, Mr C.G. Airani, the programme carried out on five plots adopting five different strategies in each field to analyse the impact of soil nutrients on paddy harvest has underlined the need for soil testing as a prerequisite, which many paddy cultivators ignored.

The strategies for demonstration plots were - local farming technique with usual irrigation and protection methods, local farming technique with application of secondary nutrients of NPK, cultivation techniques suggested by the Agriculture department, guidelines of Agriculture department accompanied by the use of secondary micronutrients. In the fifth plot, a comprehensive soil test along with its nutrients.

The resulting harvest of paddy has been estimated at 44.56 quintals, 44.76 quintals, 51.39 quintals, 73.9 quintals and 77.79 quintals respectively. The research programme would be continued for two more years, the sources said.
