Fire in Sitaram Mill

Our Bureau

Mumbai , June 3

A MAJOR fire broke out in a portion of Sitaram Mill in Mumbai, a National Textile Corporation (North Maharashtra) unit, on Thursday night and was put out several hours into the next morning. There were no casualties.

According to a fire brigade official, the contents in a 5,000 sq ft room were destroyed in the blaze. It took 13 fire engines to bring the fire under control.

Mill No. 3, located in Lower Parel, Mumbai, has been shut for about two years, according to a company official.

He added that the fire was caused by a short circuit because appliances in the area were not in proper working condition. Further the wooden floors and structures spurred the fire.

However, he said that since the mill comprised a number of independent structures, the fire did not spread.

He added that damages would amount to Rs 2 lakh-3 lakh at the most.

The disused spinning, winding and sizing unit contained some furniture, small pieces of equipment and files.
