eBay to reach out to small entrepreneurs

Hyderabad , June 6

EBAY, the global trading platform with over a million registered users in India, of the 135 million-plus users worldwide, has initiated a move to rope in entrepreneurs and reach newer towns.

The move has begun to pay off with Bollywood designer costumes, technology goods and innovative product lines becoming popular among Indian entrepreneurs.

Addressing a press conference here , the Head of eBay Academy in India, Mr Samarjeet Singh, said that the company wants to popularise the concept of trading online while making the process of payment swift and convenient. There continues to be some concern about online payment and efforts are on to make it easier for users.

Data shows that every 16 minutes a mobile phone is sold online on eBay in India and trends from China reflect that this can only get better. Not just Bollywood-style clothing, but handicrafts and jewellery have become popular and are much sought after in other parts of world.

"While eBay uses PayPal, its secure payment gateway facilitating credit card and online bank transfers globally, we have chosen to use PaisaPay, a similar offering which we acquired along with Baazee. This is being used in India. Thousands of sellers trade daily across 2,500 categories in India," Mr Singh said.

"Increasingly, people are realising the advantages of accessing products that would otherwise be difficult to get even from a remote location. The best part is that the payment mechanisms are not limited to online payment and made after delivery. Providing the latest statistics, Mr Singh said that a book sells every 64 minutes, a toy (15 minutes), a watch (4 minutes) and a laptop (150 minutes).
