Education Government - Policy TN scraps entrance test for professional courses Our Bureau
Chennai , June 6 THE Tamil Nadu Government has decided to introduce a new system based on Plus-2 marks alone for admissions to the professional courses, and do away with the entrance tests, according to an official press release. With effect from the current academic year (2005-06), admissions under the new system will be based on marks scored in the Plus-2 examinations and follow the rule of reservation. The Government has also decided to do away with the improvement exams also. The change will be introduced in time to enable counselling to start early in July with a fresh prospectus that will set out the Plus-2 exam as the entrance exam. Those who have applied earlier will be automatically treated as applicants under the new system, which will provide for new applicants to file applications. The new rule will cover all courses for which entrance exams had been prescribed till now, including B.E., B.Tech, B. Arch and allied courses, MBBS, BDS, B.Pharm and allied courses, B.V.Sc. and Law. This decision is being implemented even though entrance examinations have been conducted and results announced, because the change cannot brook any delay, the release said. The entrance exam system was introduced in 1984-85 at a time when the number of students exceeded the seats available in professional colleges. But now the opportunities have increased with some engineering colleges not able to fill up to capacity. In some professional courses such as medicine and law there is still a need to increase the number of seats, for which the Government will take action, the release said. The entrance exam, which follows immediately after the Plus-2 exams, had become a traumatic experience for the students and affected the chances of students in rural areas, the release said.
