Estimates panel to look into EPF, rural telecom

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi , June 6

THE Estimates Committee has taken up for examination during 2005-06 certain crucial subjects such as employee provident fund, development of small-scale industries, priority sector lending by public sector banks, population control and status of telecom facilities in rural areas.

The Lok Sabha has now said that the Estimates Committee would also look at issues such as power generation; production, demand and supply of lignite and coal; track modernisation; expansion and modernisation of ports and insurance schemes for weaker sections of society.

Meanwhile, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Bill 2005 that was introduced in the Lok Sabha on May 12 this year has been referred to the Standing Committee on Industry for examination and report within three months.

The Bill seeks to raise the investment ceiling for small-scale industrial units from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore. It has also proposed the setting up of a National Small and Medium Enterprises Board to make recommendations on policies and programmes for this sector.
