MoUs to be signed with Suez, Panama Canal authorities

Our Correspondent

Ramanathapuram , June 7

DISCUSSIONS are underway at an official level for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) each with the authorities of Suez and Panama canals for sharing of experiences, training of personnel and the establishment of a maritime university, said the Union Minister of Shipping, Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, here.

The MoU with the Suez Canal authorities focuses on the sharing of experiences for the construction and operation of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel (SSC), maintenance of accounts and training of personnel. The proposed MoU with the Panama Canal authorities will help in establishing a maritime university, since marine and port activities are on the increase and the demand for more skilled personnel is set to go up.

These would be signed prior to the inauguration of the works on the Sethusamudram Channel by the Prime Minister, Mr Baalu told presspersons after an inspection of sites for the inaugural meeting.
