Agricultural Policy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Wheat Govt raises wheat buffer norm for 3 quarters Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 7 THE Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has increased the foodgrains buffer norms for three quarters and decreased it for one. Given the revised norms, it would be a difficult task for the Government to reach the minimum buffer norm for wheat for July 1, which has been revised to 17.1 million tonne (mt). As per the current trend, the Government is likely to have about 14.3-14.4 mt of wheat in its stock on July 1. For July 1, the minimum buffer for foodgrains has been revised to 26.9 mt (9.80 mt rice and 17.1 mt wheat) compared to the earlier levels of 24.3 mt (14.3 mt wheat and 10 mt rice). For October 1, the buffer norm has been revised downwards to 16.2 mt (5.2 mt for rice and 11 mt for wheat) from 18.1 mt (11.6 mt of wheat and 6.5 mt of rice). For January 1, 2006, the Government has moved up the minimum buffer norm to 20 mt (11.8 mt of rice and 8.2 mt of wheat) from the previous level of 16.8 mt (8.4 mt each for rice and wheat). For April 1, 2006, the Ministry has revised the buffer norm to 16.2 mt (12.2 mt of rice and 4 mt of wheat) from the earlier levels of 15.8 mt (4 mt of wheat and 11.8 mt of rice). The norms were revised by the Ministry with effect from March 29, as per the foodgrain bulletin.
