Airlines KCCI urges State to push for intl airport Our Bureau
Mangalore , June 8 THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Karnataka Government to send a requisition to the Union Government to establish an international airport in Mangalore. In a memorandum to the Karnataka Industries and Civil Aviation Minister, Mr P.G.R. Sindhia, the KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, said that it would be possible to operate international flights from Mangalore, as many people from the region travel abroad, especially to West Asian countries. The passenger statistics of various airlines operating from Mangalore substantiate this. However, the State Government should send a formal letter to the Centre requesting it to upgrade the present domestic airport to international status, it said. The Government needs initiate steps to operate international flights from Mangalore, as the work on the second runway is likely to be completed soon. Seeking construction of a flyover from Maravoor bridge on the outskirts of the city to the proposed new terminal building of the airport, it said that the flyover would reduce the distance between Mangalore city and airport by 8 km. Coastal SEZ The chamber also urged the State Government to expedite its commitments to establish a coastal special economic zone (SEZ) in Mangalore. The Government should form a special purpose vehicle and appoint a nodal officer to implement the SEZ project, it said. The memorandum demanded that the work on the conversion of the railway gauge between Mangalore and Hassan be completed at the earliest.
