Costly catch

A group of fishermen in a mechanised boat off Kochi. The spurt in diesel prices has dealt a blow to the fuel-intensive fishing methods. According to a study, 800 ml of diesel is required to net 1 kg of fish in bottom trawling. Diesel prices now stand at Rs 28 to 30 a litre from Rs 5.74 a litre in 1991.
