THE country's advantage in the BPO segment could be further augmented if the industry altered its recruitment policy.According to Mr Soumen Basu, Executive Chairman, Manpower Services India Pvt Ltd., most companies were not focussing on the high cost of hiring the wrong person. "Companies are only thinking of managing volumes. Quality becomes a victim."

Mr Basu, who was speaking on `Sustaining the skill pool advantage — Managing HR at the firm,' at the Nasscom ITES-BPO Summit here, also emphasised the need for HR to have a deeper understanding of the economics of recruitment.

The operational team should be involved in recruitment and this is increasingly becoming the trend, said Mr Anupam Prakash, Head, Global Sourcing Practice, Asia Pacific, Hewitt Associates. While internal branding can be used to woo the `right candidate,' the country must tackle several macro issues to align the workforce to economic realities.

Mr Prakash recommended a change in the workforce profile through a change in the education system. Mr Dan Sandhu, CEO, Vertex India, felt attrition in BPOs was not `the problem' but the output of other problems in a company. "It's important for the candidate's attitude to match the company's value structure." Entry interviews at Vertex ask why people want to join the company. A separate function for organisational development should be created to manage the career aspirations of employees.
