Retailing Tai Projects to expand C3 supermarket chain Ambar Singh Roy
Kolkata , June 8 TAI Projects Pvt Ltd has firmed up plans to augment the number of outlets of the C3 supermarket chain. From two outlets in Kolkata, the number of C3 supermarkets will go up to nine in the eastern region by 2007, according to Mr Rohan Ghosh, Director of Tai Projects Pvt Ltd. Mr Ghosh said the new stores would be set up in Kolkata, its suburbs and in smaller towns such as Durgapur and Asansol. The company plans to open a store in Orissa by April 2006. Its long-termplans include setting up such supermarkets in the North-East, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. The setting up of each of these stores would entail an investment of around Rs 1.5 crore. According to him, the C3 chain would continue to focus on food products, kitchenware and personal care products. With the import duty on food products being pegged at the 10-20 per cent range, there was huge scope for importing food products from nearby countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The C3 chain accounts for 15-20 per cent of the Rs 35-crore annual turnover of Tai Projects, which is also engaged in marketing of ferro silicon, calcium carbide and food products. By 2007, the supermarket chain is expected to account for 60-65 per cent of Tai Projects' turnover. According to Mr Ghosh, the company is on the lookout for a brand ambassador for the C3 chain. "We are looking for someone who strongly identifies with Kolkata," he said, and added that the C3 brand promotion and marketing corpus in the current fiscal has been pegged at Rs 45 lakh.
