Our Bureau

Kolkata , June 9

IN the first two months of the current fiscal (April-May 2005-06), the major ports handled a total 68.13 million tonnes (mt) of traffic as compared to 58.41 mt in the same period of last year, thus posting 16.65 per cent growth.

Mumbai with a traffic throughput of 6.55 mt (4.85 mt) posted highest growth of over 35 per cent, followed by Kolkata port, a growth of 31.56 per cent at 7.93 mt (6.03 mt) and Mormagao a growth of 26 per cent at 6.74 mt (5.34 mt).

Kolkata port's traffic comprised 6.93 mt by Haldia and about one mt by Kolkata Dock System.

In May, Haldia handled an all time record traffic of 3.63 mt while KDS achieved an all time record in container throughput at 17,687 TEUs. Haldia's previous best in cargo handling was 3.61 mt in March this year while the previous best of KDS in container handling was 15,217 TEUs in November 2004. In May, KDS handled 0.54 mt of cargo and Haldia container traffic of 9576 TEUs.

Dr A. K. Chanda, Chairman of Kolkata Port Trust, attributes the improvement in port's traffic throughput to several factors such as growth of diverse cargo, arrival of new and additional cargo, multi-faceted user-friendly measures, improved services and facilities, cost-effective and customer-friendly charges of the port and cooperation of all sections of employees.
