APSRTC unions reiterate stir threat

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , June 9

IF the State Government does not change its stance and come to the rescue of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), the employees are determined to go on a strike for which the date will be fixed later this week, according to the leaders of several unions. The strike notice was served on May 19.

The leaders of the joint action committee — Mr Syed Mahmood, Mr B. Rama Rao and Mr P.N. Murthy — at a press meet here on Wednesday, accused the Government of making misleading statements on the issue and trying to divide the workers. In the prevailing circumstances, a strike seemed inevitable, they added.

The unions, they said, wanted imposition of motor vehicle tax on the Tamil Nadu pattern, reduction of duty on diesel and total reimbursement of all concessions extended to various sections of the public by the corporation .

The leaders said that if the State Government followed the example of the Tamil Nadu Government in the imposition of the tax, the burden on the corporation would be reduced by at least Rs 220 crore.

The Transport Department was not taking stringent steps to curb the stage carriers and contract carriers on the main routes and as a result the RTC was suffering heavy losses in revenue, they said.
