Raw sugar imports not to exceed 25 lt

New Delhi , June 9

THE Government has said that raw sugar import would not exceed 25 lakh tonnes (lt) this year.

"The country has a comfortable sugar supply situation for the current season," Mr S.K. Tuteja, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, said on Friday.

During the 2004-05 sugar season (October-September), 18 lt raw sugar were imported, while 3-4 lt were contracted for August delivery.

"The raw sugar import, in any case, would not cross 25 lt this year," Mr Tuteja said.

Referring to the prospects of the next sugar season (2005-06) starting from October, Mr Tuteja said the expectation of opening sugar stocks would be in the range of 45-50 lt as per all available indications. Domestic yield during the next season is estimated to be around 180 lt, he said.

On the 36-month export obligation with respect to the raw sugar import, he said, "This is valid till September and not beyond as of now."

Earlier this year, Government had extended the raw sugar import obligation period from 24 months to 36 months.

The annual sugar consumption in the country is 175-180 lt.
