NIIT plans to set up varsity

Our Bureau

THE board of directors of NIIT Ltd would meet on June 14 to discuss financial plans for setting up a University.

"We have been discussing plans to set up our own university. A special board meeting would be held on Tuesday to discuss the financial proposal for setting up a University that will offer degree courses at Bachelors and Masters level and also provide higher level studies at Ph.D level," said Mr Rajendra S. Pawar, Chairman of NIIT Ltd.

The move would enable NIIT to offer training in the formal sector, he said, adding that the University would also focus on emerging technologies in information and communication space.

"At present, we cannot give degrees to our students pursuing GNIIT program. This will make it possible for our students with GNIIT to go forward and get a degree," Mr Pawar said, but declined to commit a timeframe to the project saying much depended on Government approvals.
