VSP must not be merged with SAIL: Dev

Hyderabad , June 12

THE Andhra Pradesh Government's stand on Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has got a shot in the arm with Mr Sontosh Mohan Dev, the Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries, opposing the move to merge VSP with SAIL.

He has said that VSP, being a shore-based plant, had many advantages.

Speaking to newspersons, he said that status quo should be maintained with regard to VSP.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had opposed the merger idea recently.

Mr Dev also said that Dr Reddy should speak to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the Minister concerned, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, in this regard.

He visited the BHEL unit at nearby Ramachandrapuram and also held discussions with the Chief Minister.

According to him, a policy paper was being circulated seeking to integrate steel plants, including VSP.

Public sector units would get powers to take decisions on various issues concerning their activities, he said.

On divestment of BHEL stake, the Government would have more than 57 per cent stake even after divestment. Fifteen per cent of the stake would be earmarked for the staff.

On the meeting with the Chief Minister, he said that they discussed Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels (BHPV, Visakhapatnam) and Hindustan Cables Ltd.
