Microsoft Corporation India Pvt Ltd today announced that Mr Saurabh Jain and Mr Gaurang Sinha from MES College of Engineering, Pune, have won the Indian leg of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2005.

The winning duo will now compete in the world finals of Imagine Cup being held in July 2005 at Yokohama, Japan. Teams from over 50 countries will compete for a total prize money of $50,000.

Imagine Cup is a global contest held by Microsoft to help students across the world showcase their software development skills before an international audience. The annual contest is in its third year and this year more than 6,000 Indian students participated.

The theme for Imagine Cup 2005 is `Breaking down Boundaries' and students were encouraged to conceptualise technology solutions to help address emerging social issues.

In keeping with the theme for this year's contest, the winning team presented a traffic management system using GPS named `City Pulse'. City Pulse is an application which provides emergency services in the event of an accident or related emergencies, helps in route management by figuring out the most optimum route to get from Location A to Location B, enable users to call for a taxi from any location and control the traffic scenario dynamically by installing it at traffic signals. The main goals of this project are to reduce the time required to provide emergency services and cut down on fuel usage and pollution.

Microsoft also announced that in the IT - High School category, Varun Srinivasan from The International School, Bangalore, has stood third worldwide and will receive prize money of $1,500. This category required participants to demonstrate proficiency in the science of networks, databases and security, as well as analysis and decision-making. Worldwide, approximately 2,700 students competed in this category this year.
