Bangalore , June 14 MR Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Chairman and CEO, BPL Mobile Group, met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi, and presented a memento to mark BPL Mobile's eight years of operation in Tamil Nadu. The eight-year celebrations were held in Coimbatore and presided over by Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister of Communications and IT. Mr Chandrasekhar recalled that Mr Singh, as the Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao Government, had heralded the telecom revolution in the country by opening up telecommunications to the private sector, a press statement from BPL Mobile group said. Mr Chandrasekhar, retuning from a stint with Intel in the US, was the first Indian entrepreneur to set up a large private sector greenfield telecom project in India, with an investment of Rs 2,500 crore which has subsequently grown to over Rs 4,000 crore. BPL Mobile started operations in Mumbai in 1995 and in Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala in 1997. Thanking the Prime Minister for his support and encouragement and for the Government's efforts in creating a fair, transparent and a level field in telecom policy implementation, Mr Chandrasekhar said, "We are proud of having played a role in the development of a brand new sector and prouder still of having played our part in the development of the country. But proudest we are of the tremendous trust and commitment of the millions of people we serve and consider our most important stakeholders - our customers. Our highest growth of 45 per cent is also the result of the fair and unbiased policy implementation by the Government."
