Port & Dock workers protesting in Mumbai on Tuesday against the Centre's policy of privatising major ports across the country. — Paul Noronha

Mumbai , June 14

PORT and dockworkers staged demonstrations before the Mumbai port office on Tuesday, as part of a nation-wide agitation against the privatisation of major ports.

Addressing a rally of port and dockworkers, Mr S.R. Kulkarni, President of the All-India Port & Dock Workers Federation, warned the Government that Tuesday's demonstration was only the first step in the "prolonged struggle" against the port privatisation policy. He said the policy would affect the interests of the country, as well as those of the port workers.

"Ports are autonomous under the Major Port Trusts Act and the Government has been interfering in the day-to-day working of the ports," he pointed out.
