Airlines Jet announces plans to buy 20 aircraft Our Bureau
Mumbai , June 14 JET Airways (India) Ltd today announced plans for a major fleet expansion, entailing aircraft acquisition from both Boeing and Airbus. The agreement with Boeing is for 20 airplanes comprising six B777-200LR Worldliners, four B777-300Ers, and 10 next-generation B737-800s. "This agreement marks the introduction of the B777 aircraft into the Jet Airways fleet with options for 10 additional B777 airplanes. The B777s, which will be delivered beginning 2006, will be used to operate non-stop flights between India and the US," said an official statement. The B737s will also be delivered in 2006. The airline will acquire 10 Airbus A330-200/300 aircraft with options for 10 more. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2007 but Jet Airways will be the first Indian operator of the Airbus A330, even earlier in May 2006, when it takes delivery of the first of several aircraft leased from ILFC. Jet Airways had recently inducted three leased A340-300E aircraft for its Mumbai-London Heathrow services. "Cockpit commonality between the A330 and A340 will help to ensure a smooth A330 introduction into our fleet. We plan to use these aircraft on a mix of domestic, regional, and international flights," said Mr Naresh Goyal, Chairman. While the statement gave no investment figures, it said in its notice to the BSE that "this fleet expansion would entail significant capital expenditure to be incurred in stages over the next four years. It is envisaged that the capital expenditure would be funded through a judicious mix of internal accruals, commercial debt and export credit agency funding." The bourse was also informed that these aircraft would be delivered from 2006 through 2009.
