Monsoon getting into action mode

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , June 16

WITH the southwest monsoon entering the North-East on Thursday, the seasonal weather system seems to be getting into action mode after lying low for almost a week.

The Arabian Sea arm has also showed signs of recovery as evidenced in the "favourable build-up" along the west coast, Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) told Business Line.

In its model predictions on Thursday, the NCMRWF said the monsoon is expected to revive over south peninsular India in the next two days. This is likely to provide the trigger for its advance northward into more parts of Konkan and Goa, culminating in the onset over Mumbai and neighbourhood around Sunday.

According to Dr M. Rajeevan, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, the impeding westerlies are on the wane. "Things have changed over the last two days. The pressure gradient is getting strengthened. Rainfall activity is increasing over the North-East. The future is bright," he told Business Line.

The NCMRWF predictions indicate considerable improvement in heat wave conditions in Orissa, Jharkhand and Coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next two days. Rainfall activity over Lakshadweep, Kerala and Coastal Karnataka is tipped to increase.

However, the northern parts of the peninsula and Central India will have to sweat it out for some more before the first showers of the season arrive, Dr Gupta said. A clearer picture is expected to emerge on Friday. North and Northwest India will continue to experience mainly dry weather over the next 3-4 days.

Weather update issued on Thursday said the monsoon has advanced over some more parts of Bay of Bengal, while entering into the North-East. The northern limit of monsoon passed through Panjim, Chitradurga, Anantapur, Kaveli, Agartala, Shillong and Tezpur.

Prediction suggests progressive increase in rainfall activity over Northeastern States during the next 2-3 days, which may lead to further progress of monsoon over some more areas of these States. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal is also likely to receive increased rainfall activity with fairly widespread to widespread rains/thundershowers over the region during the next three days.

Scattered rain/thundershowers are expected over Gangetic West Bengal and Orissa and isolated over Jharkhand and Bihar during next two/three days. Thereafter, rainfall activity over Gangetic West Bengal is likely to increase.
