Thiruvananthapuram , June 19

THE State Government will seek financial assistance worth Rs 133 crore from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for the development of Kerala's dairy sector.

According to an official press release, the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, will present project proposals for this amount when he visits the NDDB head office at Anand in Gujarat on Monday. He will also request the NDDB to lower the rate at which it provides loans to the cooperative sector to 5 per cent from the current 8.5 per cent. Among the projects that are to be submitted to the NDDB for its support are proposals worth Rs 88 crore for modernising the basic infrastructure of the various regional dairy unions in the State. Funds are being sought for the establishment of a Rs 20-crore cattle feed plant in the State's Wayanad district and a proposal to set up a dairy unit in the same district.

The State Government will also seek the NDDB's assistance to turn the Wayanad Veterinary College into a veterinary university.

The Government will seek support for a Rs 5-crore project to modernise the Veterinary Biological Institute at Palode in Thiruvananthapuram district.
