There was a decline of 10.64 per cent in the fish catch during 2004-05 as against the previous year. The Deputy Director of Fisheries, Mr Suresh Kumar Ullal, told Business Line that 1,44,088 tonnes of fish worth Rs 404.89 crore were caught in these districts during 2004-05 as against 1,59,433 tonnes worth Rs 358.10 crore in the previous year. Fishing season in these districts came to an end on June 14. The Old Mangalore Port is the major fishing harbour in Dakshina Kannada. Malpe, Gangolli, Hejmadi and Hangarkatta are some of the important fishing harbours in Udupi district. Fish catch in Dakshina Kannada came down by 10,559 tonnes. The district registered a fish catch of 85,085 tonnes during 2004-05 as against 95,644 tonnes in the previous year. Though there was decline in the quantity of fish caught, it did not affect their value in the market. Fish worth Rs 404.89 crore was caught in these districts during the year, an increase of Rs 46.79 crore over previous year. Of this, Dakshina Kannada gained the maximum with a catch worth Rs 46.04 crore more than the previous year. The rise in value of fish has been attributed to the varieties that were caught during the year. Some of the varieties such as prawns and pink perch got a good price in the market.
