Free Hindi software tool, fonts to be launched today

IN a major local language initiative aimed at taking IT to the masses, the Department of Information Technology (DIT) will launch a free CD containing a collection of Hindi software tools and fonts on Monday.

The free Hindi software tools and fonts will be released by the National Advisory Council Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, an official release said, adding that the product will be made available for public distribution upon registration on the designated Web site.

Ms Gandhi will also flag off the release of a free CD containing the software.

The initiative, under the aegis of the DIT, has been spearheaded by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), academia, research labs and private players such as Modular Infotech, Cyber Scape Multimedia, CK Technogies and Softview.

The contents of the free CD will include Hindi language true type fonts with a keyboard driver; Hindi language unicode compliant open type fonts; a Firefox browser in Hindi; a multi-protocol messenger in Hindi and an e-mail client in Hindi.
