Heat wave

The unprecedented heat wave sweeping across Orissa should not be brushed aside lightly as it points to the effects of continued deforestation in the state.

The capital Bhubaneswar, where the maximum temperature is around 38-40 degrees Celcius, has now touched scorching highs of 44-46 degrees.

This shows that the city is slowly being converted into a concrete jungle deprived of natural vegetation.

It is time the Chief Minister convenes with the Pollution Board under the Environment Department to analyse the causes for the mercury rise and take remedial measures to protect the city's green belt.

R. Sekar

Angul, Orissa
