Rajiv Gandhi box terminal pre-staging yard to be ready soon

Kochi , June 21

DUBAI Port International Terminals, which has taken over the container terminal operations at the Kochi Port, is in the process of introducing more facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal as per the company's plan to develop the terminal for smooth shipping operations.

Being undertaken at a cost of over Rs 74 crore, the first step has been to start construction of a pre-staging yard.

Other initiatives include rehabilitation of the yard surface and refurbishment of the office buildings within the container terminal.

The pre-staging yard is 1.5 km away from the terminal and will enable truckers to complete all documentation before entering the yard to deliver their boxes.

This one-stop shop, to be ready by the month-end, will be manned by terminal staff and customs officials. It will simplify and streamline the documentation process.

Connected to NAVIS, an internationally recognised and technologically advanced terminal operating system, the pre-staging yard will prevent blockages and queues outside the terminal gates and enhance truck turnaround times.

The company has brought in new container handling equipment at the terminal.

Mr Mohammed Sharaf, Managing Director of Dubai Port International Terminals, said in a statement that there has been firm progress in the terminal with the delivery of new yard handling equipment.

"This is just one part of our plan to invest in the operations at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal and ensure that Dubai Port International is able to deliver the highest standards of service to our customers in Kochi," he said.
