Power BHEL gets two AP power projects Our Bureau
Hyderabad , June 22 BHARAT Heavy Electricals Ltd will execute two 500 mw thermal projects at Bhoopalapally and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. The Bhoopalapally project in Warangal district has received most of the statutory clearances, and coal and water linkages have also been firmed up. The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) would contribute Rs 1,680 crore towards the Rs 2,200 crore project. This works out to about Rs 4.4 crore per mw. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy today directed AP Genco to put the two projects on fast-track mode and ensure they were commissioned during the first half of 2008. BHEL was awarded the contract in a bid to encourage the public sector. According to an official press release, the CM also directed AP Genco to set up a 2x800 mw supercritical power project at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district. The thermal project located in a coastal area will have the advantage of a jetty facility. Being a mega project (above 1,000 mw), it can avail of customs duty exemption, which would make it cost effective. The CM sought completion of the project by 2009 to meet the growing demand for power. The Principal Secretary, Energy, and Chairman of AP Genco, Mr S.V. Prasad, said the demand for power was growing 10-15 per cent every year and unless new capacity additions were taken up, the state would be hard pressed. The 660-mw supercritical power project at Vijayawada Stage IV, for which price bids were opened in March 2005, was pegged at a high Rs 3,998 crore according to the lowest bidder, with Rs 6 crore per mw. After a revised cost of Rs 3,683 crore, or Rs 5.58 crore per mw, the project was considered unviable. The Government decided instead to go for a 500 mw project at Rs 2,100 crore, at Rs 4.2 crore per mw. Meanwhile, the power generation loss on June 22 from various stations, including gas power plants, was estimated at 885 mw. The proposed shutdown of the seventh unit of NTPC Ramagundam on June 23, has now been postponed. The average consumption during June was 135 mu in comparison to 125 mu last year. However, consumption shot to 139.9 mu on June 21.
