Mining & Quarrying Russian majors keen on beach sand mining in AP C.R. Sukumar
Hyderabad , June 22 TWO Russian majors have evinced interest in setting up beach sand mining projects involving investments to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore in the State for extraction of titanium. According to the State Industries Minister, Mr Botsa Satyanarayana, the officials of the Verkhnaya Salda Metallurgical Production Association (VSMPO), an integrated producer of titanium, aluminium, magnesium, nickel alloys and steels, and AVISMA Titanium-Magnesium Works, a major world titanium sponge producer, have held discussions with the five-member delegation of Andhra Pradesh that visited Russia during the second week of this month. The Minister said the VSMPO plant currently produces titanium sponge, which is widely used for aerospace applications, shipbuilding, gas and oil equipment, power industry and also titanium sponge for special alloyed steel. AVISMA is engaged in production of pure and alloyed magnesium that is used in the manufacture of car parts, cell-phone accessories, portable computers, articles and parts of airspace vehicles. It also supplies to aluminium industry as alloying agent and to ferrous metallurgy. The Industries Minister, who returned after a week-long tour of Russia, said the Geological Survey of India and Atomic Mineral Division have carried out explorations that led to delineation of 16 potential heavy mineral beach sand deposits over a cumulative length of 320 km from Ramayyapatnam (Nellore district) in the South to Donkuru (Srikakulam district) in North with heavies ranging from 20-32 per cent. The Minister said the minerals are used for extraction of titanium, manufacture of super alloys and also as pigments and abrasive. He said Stark, a Russia-based company had visited the State last year and held discussions with officials to explore minerals. The company invited State Government officials to visit AVISMA and VSMPO to see the scope for setting up an industry in the State.
