Non-conventional Energy Wind energy sector seeks efficiency-based incentive Our Bureau
Dr Anil Kane, Chairman, Indian Wind Energy Association, addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday. Paul Noronha
Mumbai , June 22 THE Indian Wind Energy Association (InWEA) wants the Government to be more proactive in supporting the wind energy sector. It seeks production efficiency-based incentive for the sector and not capital investment-based. In the current financial year it expects a capacity addition of 1,500 MW and an investment of Rs 7,500 crore in the sector. Dr Anil Kane, Chairman, InWEA, addressing the media on Wednesday said, "The sector has seen good growth especially in South India; Tamil Nadu with its 2037 MW installed capacity is the leader in this sector. "Here the textile industry has taken to wind energy in a big way, so as to reduce its power cost. The move has given them rich dividends and if the policies are more proactive then other industries will follow suit." Today, Tamil Nadu is the most favoured destination because 1 MW size machine produces around 35 lakh units in a year. In Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajastan it produces only 20 lakh units. Moreover, the textile units in Tamil Nadu have got financial aid under the Union Textile Ministry's Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme. Commenting on the wind energy sector in Maharashtra, Dr Kane said that with signing of power purchase agreements in the current financial year, the sector would get a boost in the State. It could add 400 to 500 MW of power and attract Rs 2,500 crore as investments. "However, Maharashtra must improve its power infrastructure. Last year, when the winds were blowing at top-speed the windmills had to be stopped as the grid could not absorb the generated power. With the oil prices hovering around $60 a barrel we must consider all these options," Dr Kane said.
