Kolkata , June 22

KENTUCKY Fried Chicken (KFC) on Wednesday unveiled plans for an all-India rollout in a phased manner.

The chicken restaurant chain will increase the number of KFC outlets in the country to "at least 12" by the end of the current calendar year.

At present, in India, KFC has five outlets in Bangalore and one each in Pune and Chandigarh, apart from the one in Kolkata opened today.

Addressing a news conference, Ms Sharanita Keswani, Director of KFC Marketing, said KFC outlets would be opened in cities such as Ludhiana and Hyderabad. Plans have also been firmed up to open one more outlet in Pune.

The company is also seeking a presence in Mumbai and Delhi. However, this will largely depend on the price at which real estate will be available in these metros.

Another outlet in Kolkata is on KFC's radar screen, Ms Keswai said, even as she ruled out immediate plans to open outlets in any other city in eastern India. Ms Keswani said all the outlets to be set up will be on franchisee basis. The franchisee will pay KFC 6 per cent of its turnover as franchisee fee and an additional 5 per cent as marketing expenses.

Setting up a franchisee entails an investment of Rs 1.75-2 crore. According to Ms Keswani, KFC does not see any opposition to its plans in India due to the "change in consumer mindset" and the "cosmopolitan nature" of its target clientele.

To meet its revenue targets, KFC will earmark "between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 50 lakh depending upon the city" for marketing and brand-building," Ms Keswani said.
