Roadways Industry & Economy - Petroleum Truckers to stay off roads on June 28 Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 22 IN protest against the hike in diesel prices by Rs 2 a litre, the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has called for a token strike on June 28, to coincide with the bandh called by the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M). The AIMTC has also decided to stage dharanas and demonstrations at various places on the day. The AIMTC has said that there will be "no booking, no delivery, no loading, no unloading" on June 28. AIMTC argues that there was no need to hike the price of diesel as there was already an increase in excise duty on diesel in the Budget by Rs 1.15 per litre and a cess of 50 paise per litre and this should have been enough to cover the rise in international crude oil prices since then. The truckers also argue that since they are already paying the road tax and cess on diesel, there should be no toll on toll-roads. If there is no roll-back of the diesel prices even after the strike, the AIMTC will convene a meeting to chalk out their plans for further protest action.
