Mangalore , June 23

THE President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, has said that India should import electricity from Bhutan.

Bhutan, which is producing around 30,000 MW of hydro electricity every year, is interested in exporting a part of it to India.

Mr Rao told Business Line here that KCCI held a meeting in this regard with the officials of the Department of Trade and Industry, Bhutan Government, during their visit to Mangalore recently.

In Bhutan, hydro electricity is being produced at a cost of 80 paise a unit. However, the electricity supply companies here have to write to the national grid to import power from Bhutan. The delegation members have assured the KCCI that they will coordinate with the Bhutan Government in this regard, Mr Rao said.

Apart from electricity, there is a good scope for importing vegetables, fruits, minerals, limestone and coal from Bhutan. The delegation also discussed cooperation with Dakshina Kannada district in the areas of tourism and education, he added. Mr Chado Rinchen, Head of Headquarters Support Services, Department of Trade and Industries, Bhutan Government; Mr T.N. Acharya, Head of Information Management Division, Department of Livestock; Mr Prema Soman of Wangel Transport Service; and Mr T.B. Rai, Officer at Department of Forests, were part of the Bhutan delegation.

The KCCI managing committee members, Mr K. Prakash Rao and Mr Ahmed Bava, the Honorary Secretary, Mr Padmanabha Kamath, the Honorary Treasurer, Mr Santosh D'Souza, and the KCCI Manager, Mr K.N.S. Shetty, were present at the meeting.
