Mumbai port transport workers on strike

Our Bureau

MUMBAI: Transport operations at Mumbai port were paralysed on Thursday when over 1,500 port transport workers went on an indefinite strike in protest against a move by the port to invite tenders for handling freight containers from pre-stacks to vessels.

According to Mr S.R. Kulkarni, President of the All India Port & Dock Workers' Federation and President of Transport & Dock Workers Federation, this move means that the port is taking over the transportation job that is currently being done by the transport workers. "In fact, the port has stipulated a condition in the tender that the successful bidder will have to bring his own workers, meaning that the existing pool of 1,500 workers will be thrown out of employment," he said.
