Cabinet clears Rs 479-cr plan for Afghan power projects

New Delhi , June 23

THE Union Cabinet today approved an expenditure of Rs 478.72 crore for execution of a 220kV double circuit transmission line and a new sub-station at Kabul to meet the power needs of Afghanistan's capital city.

The projects would be executed by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, the Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, told newspersons after a meeting of the Cabinet here.

The entire expenditure would be in the nature of assistance (grant) to Afghanistan. The projects, including a 220 kV double circuit transmission line from Pul-e-Khumri to Kabul and a new 220/110/20kV sub-station at Kabul, would enable Afghanistan to import power from Uzbekistan to meet the power requirement of Kabul city.
