THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the State Government to bring down the power tariff for industrial consumers to enable them to become competitive.
A delegation of the chamber, led by its President Mr S. Rethinavelu, submitted a memorandum to the Finance Minister, Mr C. Ponnaiyan, and the Commercial Taxes Minister, Mr C.Ve. Shanmugam, in Chennai.
The chamber pointed out that the unit cost of power in the State is in excess of the global average, and that the proposal from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to enhance the tariff for industrial consumers between 40 paise and 75 paise per unit, would affect the small-scale sector.
The memorandum also pleads for withdrawal of additional sales tax and resale tax, introduction of value-added tax, allowing the facility of setting off entry tax for manufacturers using LDPE granules and PP granules, steps to implement the recommendations of the World Bank Survey Report in respect of labour law legislations and early completion of vital infrastructure projects in the southern region etc.
