TN lorry owners to join stir against diesel price hike

Coimbatore , June 24

THE Tamil Nadu State Lorry Owners' Federation has decided to join the one-day national strike called by the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) on June 28 to protest against the hike in diesel price.

In a statement issued at Namakkal, Mr P. Sengodan, President of the federation, said the liberal sanction of loans for purchase of vehicles has led to a glut in the transport industry and the operators had to run the vehicles at lower hire rates due to fierce competition. The increase in diesel price would only worsen their plight.

The Coimbatore Lorry Owners' Association (CLOA) has taken a more strident stand against the diesel price hike, threatening to launch an indefinite strike from July 1 if the price hike was not withdrawn.

Mr K. Ramasamy, President, CLOA, said the truck operators in Coimbatore would join the strike called for on June 28.
