Karnataka drive to boost tourism

THE Karnataka Tourism Minister, Mr D.T. Jayakumar, has said that nearly 20 lakh people are likely to attend the `mahamastakabhisheka' of Lord Bahubali at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district in 2006.

Addressing a function in Udupi, he said the Government wants to take Karnataka to the top slot in tourism sector. In this regard, it is making efforts to attract people from various parts of the country for the Shravanabelagola event.

Stressing the need for boosting beach tourism in the State, he said the Government would support families with houses by the side of the beach to build additional rooms. A `marine drive' will also be built from Malpe Beach to Malpe port in Udupi district at a cost of Rs 2 crore.

To attract tourists to Jog Falls, Mr Jayakumar said he has directed the authorities to release 200 cusecs of water on weekends and national holidays.

He said that the Government has already submitted a Rs 1,000-crore proposal to the Union Government for development of tourism sector in the State.

The Minister said that Japan has agreed to provide Rs 500 crore for protecting heritage sites of Vijayanagara Empire in the State.
