New Delhi , June 26

IN a bid to distance itself from the ongoing controversy, Infinity e-Search on Sunday said it has fired Mr Karan Bahree who allegedly sold account details of a 1,000 UK bank customers to an undercover journalist of British tabloid The Sun.

"Infinity has terminated his employment as a content writer on probation with immediate effect keeping in mind the larger interests of the company. This was decided at a board meeting of the company," Mr Deepak Masih, Infinity's lawyer said here.

He said the decision taken by the company had been communicated to Mr Bahree as well as to the police.

"The Senior Superintendent of Police, Gurgaon has initiated a suo moto preliminary enquiry into the case. We are fully co-operating with them," he said adding that Infinity had furnished information about Mr Bahree as well as the company to the authorities.

Last week, Mr Bahree claimed that he had acted at the behest of another person to merely deliver a "CD presentation" without knowing that he was passing on classified information.

In a written explanation to Infinity e-Search, Mr Bahree had claimed that he knew someone called Sameer who approached him to deliver a presentation to Oliver (The Sun's journalist). He said that the information was in a CD and he did not know about the contents. He had however, admitted to taking the money as a service charge.

Infinity, on the other hand, had said it was neither a BPO nor a call centre, and did not handle any classified financial information. "We are a Web marketing company. We do not have any clients in the banking sector," Mr Rahul Dutt, Managing Director, Infinity e-Search, had said.
