Bangalore , June 30

FLORA Expo 2005, a three-day international exhibition and conference on the export-oriented floriculture industry will start in Bangalore on Friday.

The Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Kamal Nath, is inaugurating the event in which about 100 exhibitors including some 20-25 foreign participants from over 15 countries are seen participating.

Flora Expo 2005, organised by Media Today in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) and the State Horticulture Department, aims at showcasing the country's capabilities as a quality supplier of floriculture products.

Some seven State Governments, which have the potential of developing the floriculture industry are also participating in the event, said Mr K.S. Money, Chairman, Apeda.

The two-day conference sponsored by Apeda will address issues related to global production and trade.

The event is also expected to provide a platform for exchange of information and deliberations on key issues such as new technologies for production and post harvest, new varieties and sourcing of planting materials and may also lead to new buyer-seller tie-ups.

Mr Money said Apeda is bullish about the prospects of the floriculture industry.

It has played a key role for the last 10 years in the development of the industry, especially in creating the necessary infrastructure among others.

In the North East, floriculture is emerging as fast growing area with a lot of small farmers taking up growing of flowers, he said, adding Apeda is playing a key role in helping the small growers to access the markets.
