AAI to strengthen Hubli runway

THE Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to strengthen the runway at Hubli airport at a cost of Rs 8 crore.

Dr K. Ramalingam, AAI Regional Executive Director, Southern Region, Chennai, told newspersons here on Thursday that the runway at Hubli would be strengthened for the operations of ATR-72 aircraft.

Expansion of the terminal building at Bangalore airport and relocation of passenger facilities are also on the cards, he said. The AAI also plans to construct a runway at Mysore.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress made in the Mangalore airport expansion works, he said the AAI has taken up expansion of Mangalore airport for handling aircraft such as Airbus 310 and B737-800. For this, it is constructing a new runway of 2450 metres length and 46 metres width. Night landing facilities will be provided at the airport. The new runway, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 37.50 crore, will be ready by March 2006. He said that the existing runway is also being strengthened at a cost of Rs 7.30 crore.

The airport, which has two parking facilities for aircraft, would be increased to four. He commended the Karnataka Government for acquiring land and handing it over to the AAI for the expansion work.
