Talks with port workers fail

Our Bureau

MUMBAI: Talks to settle the seven-day old indefinite strike by the transport workers in Mumbai port have failed, crushing hopes of an early settlement.

Over 1,500 port transport workers had gone on an indefinite strike from June 23 to protest against the move by the port to invite tenders from private parties for taking over the job of transportation of cargoes from pre-stack to vessel.

The meeting to settle the dispute was convened by Mr Ravi Kadam, Advocate General of Maharashtra.

According to Mr S.R. Kulkarni, president of the Transport and Dock Workers' Union, the dispute could not be resolved satisfactorily due to the "inflexible and rigid attitude adopted by the representatives of the port management."
