Excise Dept sets up `Help Centre' in Kolkata

Our Bureau

Kolkata , July 1

IN keeping with the recent directive of the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, the Commissionerate of Central Excise and Service Tax, Kolkata, has set up a `Help Centre for Taxpayers', outside the department at the premises of The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, essentially to guide small assessees, importers and exporters, and service providers, and also usher in greater tax compliance.

The Centre, as envisaged in the Finance Minister's Budget speech, would provide an institutional mechanism for guidance/education on various aspects relating to income-tax, customs and central excise laws and procedures.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the department here, Ms Sunipa Basu, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, said the idea was to boost the confidence of the small taxpayer.
