Second `low' evolving over Bay of Bengal

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , July 1

THE National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) has sensed `favourable' conditions in the Bay of Bengal indicating the formation of a possible low-pressure area, the second of the season, within the next two to three days.

This comes at a time when Gujarat and parts of Konkan, Central India and Orissa reel from the impact of a `low' that has not showed signs of weakening even after five days. The centre had correctly predicted the formation of the first `low' five days in advance.

In a weather update on Friday, the medium range forecaster said that the depression, positioned over Jharkhand the previous day, had moved west-northwestwards and lay over northeast Madhya Pradesh, close to Rewa, on Friday. It is likely to move slowly in a west-northwestward direction.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over north Gujarat and neighbourhood is persisting. Another cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Rajasthan, but it is likely to weaken. The axis of monsoon trough at sea level ran through Bikaner, Ajmer, Sawai Madhopur, Jhansi, the centre of the depression and Chandbali.

No respite for Gujarat: Under the combined influence of above systems, the monsoon rainfall over central India and the Indo-Gangetic plains is likely to continue during the next three days.

Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Saurashtra, Gujarat region, north Konkan, east Madhya Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh and parts of Vidarbha and west Madhya Pradesh.

In the west, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls is likely over the Gujarat region, Saurashtra and Kutch, north Konkan; fairly widespread over south Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada during the next three to four days. Rajasthan is likely to experience scattered rain during the period.

Fairly widespread rainfall is likely over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir over the next day or two, while it will be scattered over the rest of the region.

Fairly widespread rainfall is expected over east Uttar Pradesh and the scattered rainfall over Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa and the north-eastern States is likely to continue.

Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy showers during next the three days. Scattered rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, coastal and interior Karnataka, and scattered rainfall over Rayalaseema, Kerala, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next three to four days.
