Naidu opposes BHEL disinvestment

VISAKHAPATNAM: The President of the Telugu Desam Party, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, said he was totally opposed to disinvestment in BHEL. His party would oppose attempts to reduce Government stake in profit-making PSUs, he said at a press meet here on Friday. He recalled that he had opposed the moves of the then minister for disinvestment, Mr Arun Shourie, to privatise the Visakhapatnam steel plant. "The steel plant was in great difficulties in the late nineties. But we knew it could be turned around and we opposed moves to privatise the plant. Our calculations have proved right. So is the case with Singareni Collieries,'' he said.

Commenting on the huge gas find in the Krishna-Godavari basin by Gujarat Petroleum Corporation and allegations that his Government had not shown much foresight in the matter, Mr Naidu said there was no truth in it. "Under the new exploration and licensing policy, the NDA Government had then allotted blocks to Reliance, GPCL and several other companies. The State Government then did not have the resources or the technical expertise to undertake such offshore exploration. Therefore, we could not make a bid for it," he said.
