Leading luminaries to take part in Hyderabad Science Congress

IN addition to the galaxy of scientists, Nobel laureates and leading public figures, who will attend the 93rd edition of the Indian Science Congress to be held in Hyderabad during January 3-7, 2006, six young Indian scientists will be awarded at the congress.

From 2006, the Young Scientists winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 25,000 (up from Rs 5,000) and get to present their works in the session. The 5-day science meet, to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has already got confirmation from 4 Nobel laureates — Dr Norman Borlaug, Dr Robert Ernst, Dr Hargobind Khorana and Prof. Amartya Sen.

The President of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has agreed to spend a good part of January 5 at the Children's Science Congress and interact with young scientists, according to Dr I.V. Subba Rao, President of the Indian Science Congress Association. The theme of the Congress is - "Integrated Rural Development: Science and Technology".

The Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University will host the meeting, he told newspersons today.

The UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, the Chairperson, National Advisory Council of UPA, Ms Sonia Gandhi, the External Affairs Minister, Mr K. Natwar Singh, the Science and Technology Minister, Mr Kapil Sibal, renowned agriculture scientist, Dr M.S. Swaminathan, former Vice-President of the World Bank, Dr Ismail Seregaldin, and Mr Sam Pitroda, are among the leading personalities to participate, he said.
