Chennai , July 1

THE Madras Management Association (MMA) will launch a centre for continuing education to offer short-term courses in management and another for business development.

Addressing the valedictory of MMA's annual general meeting at which the first `MMA Distinguished Fellowship Award' was given to Mr A. Sivasailam, Chairman, Amalgamations group, Mr P.K. Mohapatra, President, MMA, said that in the coming year the association would also launch a centre for management development.

These initiatives take place against the backdrop of people taking up employment at a progressively younger age without an opportunity to go through a formal business education. The centre for continuing education would offer short-term and year-long courses for young executives.

Also, management development was aimed at helping family run businesses, which hope to learn from experiences of larger players, the trends and processes in modern systems.

MMA, which is among the largest associations of its kind with 3,000 members, is in the process of setting up process and systems to deliver services to its members, he said.

Mr Sunil Alagh, President, All India Management Association, who was the chief guest, said companies would have to develop leadership at all levels to stay ahead in the competition. "Distinct or Extinct" would be the principle governing their existence.

Mr A. Krishnamurthy, Vice-Chairman, Amalgamations Group, accepted the MMA Distinguished Fellowship Award on behalf of Mr A. Sivasailam.

Mr Alagh also gave away the MMA Award for Managerial Excellence to Lucas-TVS Ltd in the manufacturing sector; Ma Foi Management Consultants in the services sector; Susira Industries in the Small and Medium Enterprises sector; and to the Bharathidasan Institute of Management in the educational sector.
