Mr Azim Premji

Bangalore , July 2

THE Wipro Chairman, Mr Azim Premji, has called upon the country's leadership to transform India into a developed nation and to take its growth rate past those of advanced countries.

Delivering a keynote address at a CII conference in Bangalore on `Re-energising India Inc - Challenges', Mr Premji said leadership was needed at multiple levels such as the personal, enterprise and social levels to transform India in the coming decades.

"In fact, India could grow the fastest among all countries at an average six per cent, going past Italy, Germany and France in the 2015-2025 time frame and past Japan in 2032. However, achieving this may not be easy," he said. India could well be the world's third-largest economy after the US and China in less than 30 years from now, Mr Premji said.

While quality, technology and cost-effectiveness were short-term drivers for growth, long-term factors, such as demographic shifts, as in the case of India, could herald economic transformation, Mr Premji said. India, where the young would represent the largest percentage of population in contrast to other developed countries, should ``capitalise on this unprecedented opportunity for success and growth," he said, stressing that utilising youth could place India on a totally different league in economic transformation.

Mr Premji said the country faced numerous complex issues and that primary education was at the top of the list. Education helped people make informed choices and enhanced their access to opportunities, he said.
