Bio-fertiliser policy soon

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , July 3

THE Andhra Pradesh Government will soon come out with a bio-fertilisers policy.

It is intended to promote these emerging products that would help improve fertility of soils.

The policy, which has been formulated will be put up for Cabinet approval and a bill will be introduced in the next session of the Assembly, according to the State Agriculture Minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy.

The Minister urged scientists to evolve ways to help farmers get good crops with less input cost, conserve water and apply latest techniques.

Very recently, the State Government had put in place new seed policy in a bid to curb spurious seeds and ensure that quality seed and material reached the farmers. The Government is spending Rs 109 crore towards this.

Mr Reddy, who was speaking at a workshop on strengthening research-extension linkages, organised by the Agriculture Department, said the main problem faced by farmers was non-availability of quality seed. Hence, the Government had taken up seed farming by adopting 370 villages during the last rabi season.

This effort resulted in the production of 60,000 quintals of seed, which was distributed to the farmers in neighbouring villages. During the present kharif, another 1100 villages are being adopted for seed farming, he added.
