Fixed telephony comeback

This refers to the article `Fixed line telephony set to make a comeback' (Business Line, July 4). It is a relief that after their short spell of success in mobile connections, the main players have realised that it is only fixed telephony that will survive in the long run.

It would be worthwhile to note that it is the players who `popularised' the mobile phones in place of fixed phones provided by BSNL, the one time monopolist in the sector, who are leading the revival of fixed telephony.

However, it is regrettable that no player, either in the mobile or fixed telephony sectors, is interested in the benefits of the customers.

The present rethinking, reportedly on the basis of the increased estimates on the average revenue per user (ARPU) is a pointer in this regard.

As expected, the introduction of triple facilities of voice calls, high speed Internet and viewing the TV on a single wire line would indeed, attract millions of mobile customers to the fixed telephony system, notwithstanding the cost loads. The integrated players including BSNL may stand to gain. But the plight of the customers would continue unless the regulator intervenes.
